I’ve long wanted a regular gratitude practice because what the ancients knew (“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all others,” Cicero) has been scientifically proven: grateful people are happier, more successful, and often live healthier, longer lives.
And, I’ll admit, there’s another big appeal: it’s free!
But for years, I’ve struggled to adopt a daily ritual. I tried writing down five things I’m grateful for each morning; when that didn’t stick, I tried three. I tried sending an email each day to someone I appreciated. I tried tying gratitude to existing routines, like my morning meditation, brushing my teeth, and taking a shower.
