Hello! I hope your week has been good. It’s been all about baby chickens around here - our eight little ladies arrived on Tuesday and have been distracting us ever since!
I was warned about this by a friend who is an experienced chicken keeper; “We call it Chicken TV” she said, about the urge to watch them constantly. There’s something mesmerizing and addictive about observing their routine of peeping adorably, scooting around like tiny wind-up toys, pecking at their food, taking tiny sips of water, and pooping. SO. MUCH. POOPING.
Aside from the peeping of baby chicks, the official soundtrack of my week has been Jiggle Jiggle - have you heard it? If not, click the link on the video below.
Yes, this joke rap song by Louis Theroux (the middle-aged documentarian) has its own Wikipedia page and is all over TikTok. How? Why? I don’t know, but I can’t get it out of my head!
By the way, the video below shows clips from a YouTube show called Chicken Shop Date, where a British woman, Amelia Dimoldenberg, has awkward but strangely watchable conversations with famous people at divey hot chicken shops around England. If you don’t have baby chicks around the house and have spare YouTube watching time, this may be for you!
Both of my kids are into Jiggle Jiggle. Sadie’s made a video of the dance with a friend and Teddy’s favorite part is “red wine” which, bizarrely, is because of the Neil Diamond song. You’re confused? I know. It makes no sense. You just have to go with it.
When Sadie and Teddy actually agree on something it’s like parenting heaven, and so to my delight, not only have they both been Jiggle Jiggling all week, but I inadvertently hit the jackpot again last night, when talking about how we decided on their names and I referred to Jim as “Daddy.” Severe scoffing ensued, as both kids groaned in unison and reprimanded me for using such a “cringey” term for their father. Was I sorry to have embarrassed them into a committed alliance? No, I was not.
When not staring at baby chicks or Jiggle Jiggling, I’ve been watching Hacks, which feels like the perfect summer show for me: short, funny, clever episodes, a very talented cast, and two whole seasons to keep me occupied. It was on this list of shows for people with short attention spans (!) from The Atlantic. I can also personally vouch for Abbott Elementary, and Schmigadoon, which I watched with Sadie over the winter.
I’m not cooking much at the moment - because it’s warm outside, I just want to throw together easy things, like salad and something on the grill - but I did make a new dish this week: the chicken bacon “smashburger” from Ali Slagle’s new cookbook, I Dream Of Dinner So You Don’t Have To. I subbed ground turkey for chicken, added some lettuce, and am happy to report that three kids ate them greedily.
In fact, it may have been due to the deliciousness of that dinner that Teddy, over breakfast one morning this week, asked, “Mom, when I have a house and I live alone, will you come over to visit if I ask you? I’m going to want to show you stuff.” Trying to hide my smile of motherly delight, I confirmed that I would love to visit him at his house anytime I’m invited…
I’m going to return to my baby chick viewing now, so it’s goodbye for this week!
Thank you so much for reading - and for sharing and subscribing. I have so much fun collecting little snippets all week to send to you all on Fridays, and I hope you have as much fun reading.
xoxo
Amelia
P.S: Here’s some Chicken TV for you!
PPS: Unrelated, but if you’re a fan of Wes Anderson, you might like this hilarious Saturday Night Live take-off of his movies. It’s old, but I hadn’t seen it until Sadie showed me this week.
