Love this! Often the best traditions evolve organically— the first thing my kids do when visiting their grandmothers summer home is visit the basement because they love the smell! (We don’t have basements in CA.). I just wrote a newsletter on this topic, through a ritual lens: https://open.substack.com/pub/krisfarrenmoss/p/vacation-on-purpose?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

I love that tradition! It's the littlest things--and smell really evokes memories!

I love this tradition! Did each family stay in their own rental or all the same house? And each pay their own way? My kids are 12-20 now but hope to have a beloved annual family tradition one day

It's truly a special tradition - originally everyone stayed together in the cottage the family owned, but now that there are so many generations and people, we all rent houses and cover the costs separately. Until our kids have their own kids, I assume we'll keep including them in our rental house!

I loved this post—my family has a similar story (my grandfather lived in Massachusetts and went to a Beach in New Hampshire when he was young), then when he moved to the Midwest and had seven kids he continued taking them to this Beach; my father did the same with me and my siblings. It’s beautiful to have a family tradition like that. Thanks for sharing!

That sounds so similar to our story - are you still going each year?

Every two years now!

This is such great advice! I love that paddleboard pic. We go almost every year to visit my family in southern Oregon for the holidays—my aunt and my sister are both photographers, so it is always a well-documented holiday. :)

That paddle board pic is one of my all time faves! These family trips are worth it - and a lot of work - at the same time!
