Hello, Happy Friday, and welcome to a special birthday edition of Some Happy Scribbles!
I started this newsletter just over a year ago as a way to build an audience - to find my readers - while I worked on a novel.
The novel was my second book project: I had already written a memoir that was unpublished. By the time I started work on the novel, I had learned a few things: writing a book is lonesome work and takes a long time (years!); you don’t get much feedback until it’s finished; and it’s quite possible that it will never be published…
And so, as a somewhat impatient person, I wanted a way to communicate through writing, with actual people, regularly.
The thing is, I soon realized that I love this blogging / newsletter thing. I think it’s partly because I’ve long had a fantasy of hosting my own Oprah-style talk show, where each week I delve into a different topic, and interview celebrity guests.
Over the past year, I’ve written about fun, friendship, marriage, grief, and some of the things that get in the way of happiness. I’ve shared seasonal recipes, and made up wildly optimistic horoscopes.
My goal is to entertain, amuse, inspire, delight, and engage you - while selfishly figuring out answers to my own problems, and watching TV and reading books in the name of research. To me, it really does feel (as long as you ignore the lack of famous guests, and um, actual out-loud-talking) like this blog is my very own talk show!
Speaking of Oprah, as I thought about reaching this milestone, I wondered how I could thank you, dear readers, for faithfully following along every Friday.
