Happy on Purpose is a bestselling newsletter about happiness, habits, and how to thrive in midlife—whenever you define it!
I’m Amelia Wilson, the writer behind Happy on Purpose, and I’m so glad you’re here.
My difficult childhood made me an expert on unhappiness. As a teenager, I decided my purpose in life would be to make things better after discovering the meaning of ameliorate, the root of my name.
My goal—for you and me—is to make happiness feel less like luck and more like a daily practice. Happy on Purpose is built on a simple idea: that happiness isn’t a personality trait you’re born with: it’s something you build, one small decision at a time. Everything I write is designed to make those decisions a little easier and a lot more enjoyable.
Over 14,000 readers subscribe for practical, joyful (and gentle!) ideas for making the most of everyday life.
No politics. No scary headlines.
Happy on Purpose has been featured in Cup of Jo, Culture Study, Emily Ley’s The Landing, Modern Mrs. Darcy, Be More with Less, and more.

About the Newsletter
Happy on Purpose is a weekly newsletter. Each edition features life advice, happiness hacks, and curated culture recommendations designed to improve your life in 5 minutes or less.
Every habit, mindset shift, or reframe is chosen because it genuinely moved the needle for me, or because research proves its effectiveness.
I read the latest scientific studies and self-help books, and distill their most useful takeaways, and I take leisure seriously: in 2025, I read over 60 books and watched twice as many TV shows and movies to share the best with you!

Some More About Me...

I grew up in Australia, where a difficult childhood made me an expert on unhappiness. As a teenager, I decided my purpose in life would be to make things better after I discovered the meaning of ameliorate, the root of my name.
Like many voracious readers, I was directed toward law school. After receiving my degree, I moved to London and New York, where I worked for Goldman Sachs, the investment bank, and then as a fundraiser for charities.
It took me decades to learn that a traditional career wasn’t for me. All that time, I kept a secret journal where I wrote about my yearning for work that felt meaningful: work that would challenge me, make a positive difference, and align with who I really was.
But it took hitting a rock bottom of my own making in my early 40s to finally find my calling. With the help of therapy, I learned to stop keeping my desires secret, even from myself. I started Happy on Purpose when I was 48. It is both humbling and exhilarating to begin a new career in midlife—but I would be consumed with regret if I had not tried.
Now, I’m in my early 50s. I live in the bucolic New England countryside with my husband of 20 years, Jim, our two teenage children, Sadie and Teddy, and our fluffy lapdog, Ollie. I play tennis and mahjong, dabble in watercolors, and adore traveling.
I love woodburning fireplaces and cozy snow days as much as swimming in the ocean and sunset boat cruises. I read novels and self-help books, love British spy series and Will Ferrell movies, cocktail jazz and 80s hair bands, and while I’m a part-time introvert, two of my favorite pastimes are chatting with friends and parties that include maracas, group sing-alongs, and dance-offs!
“You are like my wiser older sister who has the best advice.” J.S.
“I am grateful for your newsletter. It truly reminds me to stop and breathe and embrace the feeling of joy and happiness amidst the chaotic times we are living in.” Laura M.
“It’s upbeat, inclusive (you’re a mum and I’m single and 39 and don’t feel left out when I read your content - thank you).” Kate D.
